Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
For the Creamy Gravy
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Equipment

  • Oven-safe skillet
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Foil

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper. Form into 6–8 patties and set aside.
  2. Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add butter to the skillet. Sauté sliced onion until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in beef broth and cream. Stir in garlic powder.
  4. Return patties to skillet, spooning gravy over. Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 minutes more.
  5. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

For extra flavor, add mushrooms or a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the gravy. Make ahead and reheat gently for best texture. Pairs beautifully with green beans or dinner rolls.
